Like any good Southern belle, Kianna Alexander wears many hats: loving wife, doting mama, advice-dispensing sister, and gabbing girlfriend. She's a voracious reader, history nerd and craft fanatic. Kianna lives in North Carolina with her husband, two kids, and a collection of well-loved vintage 80's Barbie dolls.

Kianna Alexander’s Favorite Contemporary Romance Films

Beyond the Lights (Film, 2014)
Y’all. You have to see this movie. It is hands down one of the best romantic films of the last twenty years. It has a really great score, full of original hip hop and R&B. Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nate Parker’s chemistry is so hot it may melt your television screen, so take care while watching. You’ll probably cry, and you’ll definitely swoon. Also, look out for Minnie Driver in a fantastic turn as the overbearing mother you’ll love to hate.

The Best Man Holiday (Film, 2013)
Another fantastic romantic film, with an ensemble cast. This movie is at times hilarious, and at times devastatingly sad. It shows three couples at different stages in their relationships, navigating love and marriage in a very real way. It’s beautiful all the way through, making it worth the 14 year wait between it and its predecessor, 1999’s The Best Man.

Love Jones (Film, 1997)
Watching this movie is considered something of a rite of passage for Black women of a certain age/generation. Reviews on it can be mixed, but I thought this movie was incredibly sexy. Larenz Tate and Nia Long star in this romantic drama where passion and poetry collide to create something really special. As a side-note, the soundtrack to this film is classic lovemaking music. Just sayin’.

Underground (TV Show, WGN)
While the setting isn’t contemporary, this is a show that’s currently on television. It’s not a love story, but there are love stories contained in the plot. None is so intensely portrayed or hard fought as the one between Rosalie and Noah. If you’ve never seen the show, watch the first season to see their budding attraction unfold into the real thing.
