Spying 101 with Bonde, Jane Bonde
by Shana Galen
Dear Reader,
Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a good spy or a successful secret agent? In a profession dominated by men, the idea of a woman as a spy is practically inconceivable. So what better cover for a spy than being a woman? I always use the fact that spying for the Crown is considered a man’s vocation to my advantage. No one expects a woman to be a spy. Little do they realize that spying is perhaps better suited to women than men. We’re far craftier, sneakier, and more perceptive. Why not ask my fellow female spies, Saint or Butterfly, who the most capable spy in their respective households is, their husbands or themselves?
A good spy always has an exit strategy. She must be able to leave a room using unconventional means—out a window, down a wall, through a secret door, or over a balcony. Sometimes one must leave ballroom unexpectedly. It’s important to know your exits, and never underestimate the power of a light swoon or a sudden megrim.
Flexibility in all situations is essential. Occasionally, when I’m caught in an unexpected situation, I have to improvise. Most recently I had to kiss the last gentleman in England I’d ever want to kiss, the man my aunt and uncle had chosen for me to marry, Dominic Griffyn. And yes, I kissed him first, but it was only to distract him…let’s just say the kiss did not go as planned.
A good spy needs a team of peers and supporters she can trust. I have my fellow agents from the Barbican group—Saint and Wolf, Baron and Butterfly, and the enigmatic Blue. Perhaps you’ve heard of them? I also have my Miss Quillen, who who makes clever gadgets for me and the other agents to use in the field. She’s amazing. Just don’t stand too close when she’s experimenting.
Oh, and how could I forget the importance of good hair? Hair that can be hidden in a hat, since keeping my cover is of the utmost of importance. And one’s hairstyle must lend itself to being a hiding place for tools of the trade. A lock pick hidden in the hair is a must. Taking off my hat to reveal my sex, has it uses as well. Nothing confuses my opponent as much as thinking he is fighting a man and then realizing I’m actually a woman.
The only inconvenience is that my cover is my life. To be convincing, I’m obligated to attend balls and engage in social chitchat, all the while the security of the empire hangs in balance. People see what they want to see, and with me they see an attractive, unattached young woman, desperate for a husband. Nothing could be further from the truth, but even in this I play my part. After all, the secret to being a good spy is convincing people to see what you want them to see.
Now if I could just convince Griffyn to see me as someone he should not marry, all will be well in my world.
This is all very hush, hush—top-secret information. Let us keep it between ourselves, shall we?
Jane

Her name is Bonde, Jane Bonde…
A beautiful and eligible member of the ton, Jane has more than a few secrets: she’s one of the Crown’s most elite agents. She may be deadly, but she doesn’t know a thing about fashion, flirtation, or love…until Dominic Griffyn shakes up her carefully stirred world and asks her to be his bride. He’s exactly the kind of man she’s not looking for. And he’s dangerous, because falling into his arms is so much more satisfying than saving England from her enemies.

He’s an improper gentleman who needs a wife…
Talk, dark, and tortured, Dominic Griffyn is haunted by demons from his past. When his stepfather insists that he marry, Dominic allows himself to hope that the beautiful but mysterious Miss Bonde might help him forget his troubles. As they grow closer, it’s clear that there’s more to Jane than danger. She might be just what his neglected heart needs.
