Five Fun Facts about In His Command by Rie Warren + #Giveaway

Meet Rie:
Badass, sassafras Rie Warren is the author of Sugar Daddy and the Don’t Tell series—a breakthrough trilogy that crosses traditional publishing boundaries beginning with In His Command.

She lives in gorgeous Charleston, South Carolina with her small family where she basks in the sunshine during the day, and adjourns to her woman cave at night. A nocturnal creature, she stays up way too late talking to herself, her characters, and anyone who will listen. She’s all about writing with heat, heart, and a hint of the dark, and she doesn’t shy away from the impossible.

Rie’s work has been called “edgy”, “daring”, and “some of the sexiest smut around”.

1. When people ask me about the Don’t Tell series, I’m like, ‘Huh? What’s that?’ I started these books referring to our men Big Man Caspar and Blondie (nom_nom Nathaniel) as Dystopian Dudes. I still think of them that way (and most of my docs are titled the same)

2. I like to go right to the brutal heart of the matter (bet you couldn’t tell that, right?). The very first lines I wrote for In His Command while I was still sketching the story were these angsty, effed up black moment bits. The essence remained the same from first write to final edit *whips out a tissue one more time*:

His voice was ghostly as a thin cloud racing across a midnight sky, “Last words?”
Oh yeah, I had a lot of those. Starting with Fuck and ending with You. But I wasn’t doing that. I squared my shoulders and opted for a different FU. “I forgive you.”
He was so silent, I wondered if he was just gonna plug me with no warning. Shooting my head around, I had to look at the man one last time. My gaze landed on his lapel overflowing with the nodding flowers he’d first given me and then his eyes, so glittery blue they put those frigging blooms to shame. “Forget me not, Nathaniel.”
I turned my eyes to the tree ahead.
The brush of metal from leather sounded, his weapon readied.
A loud click as his gun was cocked.
Its discharge deafened me, two blasts in quick succession.

3. I always work with sexy sinspiration in mind. What can I say? I’m a visual kinda gal (perv). Here’s the hot stud I based Blondie aka Nathaniel Rice on. WOOF! And let us dribble_dribble_drool.

And what does Cannon think of that hot mofo man? Hmm, let’s have a look, shall we? From In His Command:
His sleepy blue eyes were sharp. Angular jaw clean of sun-hued stubble. His hair was pulled back, revealing a little bit of hotness I’d missed before. Buzzed with a No. 2 razor guard, his hair was close on the sides of his head in two wide swaths, with that long, grade-A Mohawk pulled back in a ponytail. Add the double helix piercing through the cartilage of his ear and he was straight up sex, modeling a suit that probably cost as much as filling my tank for five months.

5. I write every chapter to a different song and keep ongoing playlists on Youtube. Now, Blondie had this thing about a ‘throwback’ musician named Van Morrison. During the Harvest Fest scene in the book, I’d included lyrics from Astral Weeks. Writers beware: don’t ever do that! The hoops I had to jump through simply to find out who held the rights to the song so I could get permission…oy vey. When I finally found them, I sent copy of the scene. Erm, it appears Van the Man’s peeps were not impressed with the man-lovin’. DENIED.

I went off and cried. I emailed a bunch o’ friends. One of them had this contact, an incredible South African chanteuse, Shotgun Tori. Miss Tori read the excerpt, let me pick one of her songs, and granted me permission to use the lyrics for frees. I freakin’ bow down to this songstress!

These Birds is the perfect music for Cannon and Blondie, have a listen here:

His hands mesmerized me, fingers tapping out a rhythm before they began singing. Then . . . Jesus. His voice was like the high-rising birds he sung about, a revelation. I hung onto every word, and he watched me all the while he strummed and let the words flow:

These birds are a reminder of who you used to be
Uncaged and unfettered, so wild and so free
See, I know I was your captor and your guilt was the key
But my heart was too heavy for one bird to carry

It’s like a war here and there are minefields everywhere
And there are no war heroes, only senseless fear
And we’re the cowards, doing what we can to survive
And there are no war crimes
‘cause here no-one, no-one, no-one, no-one’s fine.

His singing was as vibrant, clear, and strong as the man himself. I snagged a bystander. “What’re they singing?”
“I don’t reckon I’ve ever heard this’un before but Hills might know if you catch up with him.”

We put out some papaya to see the best ones fly
Like anything that matters, unbidden you came by
And danced upon my landscape. I hope you don’t blame me
For breathing in your goodness and leaving nothing free

It’s like a war here and there are minefields everywhere
And there are no war heroes, only senseless fear
And we’re the cowards, doing what we can to survive
And there are no war crimes
‘cause here no-one, no-one, no-one, no-one’s fine.

I hope you don’t blame me
For breathing in your goodness and leaving nothing free

Beautiful and seductive, the words hit so close to home. Their song ended slowly, softly, his sultry eyes mesmerizing mine.

I’m 100% dedicated to writing the hottest sex out there, and it doesn’t matter if it’s m/m or het, ménage or BDSM. I do it for y’all, heh ;). If you’re not squirming in your seats, I’m not satisfied.

I had an awesome time chatting with you all! I’ve got a fantastic gritty-sexy contemporary series with news coming soon—Carolina Bad Boys—and book II of the Don’t Tell series, On Her Watch, out in 2014. You can catch the sneak peek first chapter at the end of In His Command. I’m always around, writing, laughing, and purveying the hotness. Don’t be shy, y’all.

It is the year 2070. Generations ago, the world was annihilated by catastrophic environmental events. The survivors were driven to live in big city centers ruled by the Company. To rebuild the world’s population, the oppressive Company had one rule: all homosexuals must be exterminated.

Commander Caspar Cannon has a stellar military reputation—and a life-threatening secret. When a revolution rips through the territories, Cannon is ordered to escort Company executive Nathaniel Rice to a secure location. For months, the commander has harbored illicit desire for Rice, knowing he cannot act on his attraction. Privileged, polished, and groomed to one day take over the Company, Rice is drawn to the rugged, military man. Yet Rice has his own mysterious agenda, and he knows their love can be as dangerous as the wasteland they must traverse.

Now leaving the besieged city behind, the two men embark on a journey that becomes a minefield of sabotage, betrayal—and forbidden passion. But when danger catches up to them, can Cannon trust the secretive man who holds his heart—and his fate?
