Artemis Greaves toils as a lady’s companion, but hiding beneath the plain brown serge of her dress is the heart of a huntress. When the Ghost of St. Giles rescues her from footpads she recognizes a kindred spirit—and is intrigued. She’s even more intrigued when she realizes who exactly the notorious Ghost is by day…

It’s been awhile since I’ve read a historical romance, and WOW this novel is AMAZING. Immediately I was pulled back in time and into the characters’ lives.

Duke of Wakefield, Ghost of St. Giles, Maximus—each name, a different aspect of the same man. A teen boy forced into becoming a Duke after his parents murder, he never gives up his mission to track their killer. He is also fighting to be the best Duke possible to honor his father’s memory. Searching for the proper wife, he meets Artemis. She’s the lady’s companion to Lady Penelope, a lady of proper standing to be his wife.

Artemis has struggles of her own, fighting to save her brother from certain death in prison. However, her strong will and determination allow her to see Maximus the man, not just the Duke. Her feelings grow strong for him, but she knows he could never be hers.
“He burned with an internal inferno she wanted to touch. She stared into the gaze of a tiger and knew, even as she watched the cat retreat into the camouflage of a gentleman.”
Artemis sees her society standing clearly and decides to reach for her wants, her desires, and her freedom. When she goes to Maximus, they are explosive. The pages burn as you read the passion between them!
“You mustn’t leave me. Without you there’s no light in the world. No laughter. No purpose.”
A must read! This is Book 6 in the Maiden Lane Series, but is easily read as a stand-alone. Personally, I’m going to get the rest immediately!
