REVIEW:

Looking for the perfect holiday read? Look no further than Lily Dalton's Never Desire A Duke. Not since Eloisa James' An Affair Before Christmas have I wanted to re-read a holiday historical until the spine cracks. Dalton's debut will definitely be on my holiday reading list, over and over again.

The Duke and Duchess of Claxton have been estranged since the Duke took off after his wife found a missive from an ex-lover and the Duchess losing their child—rushing out in haste, slipping on ice and miscarrying.

Claxton returns home to try to reconcile with his wife, Sophia, but she will have none of it. She's so over his lies and promises but she does want a child. And the only way is to make a deal with Claxton. She'll stay with him until they conceive a child. Then they'll file for a legal separation. Easy peasy, right? Nope.

Sophia will do everything in her power to resist the pull between her and Claxton. She doesn't want to get hurt again. She doesn't want to fall in love with him only to get her heart broken a second time. Sophia keeps a list—that she has Claxton write up—of all of his previous paramours tucked in her bodice as a cockblocker. It's pretty effective, for a while.

Claxton will do whatever it takes to win Sophia's love again. It will take sleigh rides, a scavenger hunt, a baking contest that results in hot and heady kisses, showing compassion to those less fortunate, a Regency version of The Elf on the Shelf, some mistletoe and a heart that will grow three sizes on Christmas Day.

One of the things I loved in this book is the hilarious antics of the secondary characters. A lonely countess who wants Claxton's attention and follows him to the country, a brother who will stand-in just to get a little something something with the lonely countess, an elderly husband bent on shooting the living daylights out of the wrong brother for sleeping with his wife, and a countess who learns the true meaning of Christmas.

In the spirit of the Christmas season, Dalton weaves a hilarious, heartbreaking and heartwarming tale of a second chance at love gift wrapped in a blanket of snow. Dalton's debut is one book you'll want to keep on your holiday reading list for years to come.

Favorite Quote:
Hadn't she learned well enough the first time? She'd fallen so desperately in love with him, but in the end, her love had not been enough to hold him. She wouldn't be so foolish as to make the same mistake again.
