Ex-Army Ranger Gabriel Vincent is a badass hero. Or he used to be. Home from Afghanistan, Gabe can't stop thinking about that one horrible night on the battlefield, a night that changed his life forever. He knows he's messed up, but with the help of a little beer and a lot more women, he's keeping it together. Until he meets Madison Hill.
Madison is happily single-or so she thinks. After the tragic death of her parents, she took on the responsibility of running the family restaurant, and that's just about all she has time to worry about. Until she meets Gabriel Vincent.
Though they don't realize it at first, Gabe and Maddy will soon develop a weakness: each other. But Gabe has a secret, a hidden monster that he's afraid Maddy could never overcome. And Maddy is dealing with issues she fears Gabe won't understand. They quickly realize they need each other to be whole, but they have demons to fight-and the problem with demons is that they never die quietly. Can they find a way to heal the past . . . before they lose each other?

“The bad thing caught you.”
Gabriel Vincent is facing some demons. As an ex-army ranger, Gabe suffers from some serious PTSD that keeps him running from the memories of what happened. And that running sends him into the path of Madison Hill.
Maddy has been running her family’s restaurant and taking care of her sister since her parents died years ago. She’s been doing everything herself and doesn’t need anyone. Besides, being a witness to her parent’s abusive marriage Maddy knows she's better off on her own. That is until Gabe shows up in her little town.
See Gabe isn’t the only one with demons. Maddy has her own set of demons and Gabe seems to trigger them. He is everything she should stay away from:
“Try as I might to stay away from powerful, strong guy, guys who command a room, guts who may hurt me… I am totally and completely attracted to those guys. I’m attracted to the very things that might hurt me the most.See Gabe is an Alpha male… with a capital A and it totally freaks Maddy out. After seeing the way her father was towards her mother she wants to avoid men like that. But as she gets to know Gabe she realizes that he’s not like her father. But when Gabe’s secret comes out, she needs to decide if she can truly love him.
It’s glaringly obvious that Gabriel is all of those things.
Maddy comes off kind of bitchy and rude but you quickly realize that it’s her defense mechanism. Surprisingly, I came to really like her. And of course I loved Gabe. But I have a thing for the tortured heroes. But I really loved them together. Separately, Gabe and Maddy are broken but somehow they seem to fit together to help heal each other. Without each other they seem to just be existing, but together they are really living their lives.
If You Leave will hit you like a mac truck of emotion. Courtney Cole hits you right in the beginning and doesn’t pull any punches. Not only will your heart break for Gabe but you will fall instantly for him.
I fell in love with Courtney Cole’s writing when I read If You Stay, the first in her Beautifully Broken series. If you haven’t had the chance to read it then pick it up… and then read If You Leave.
