Guest Post with Kimberly Kincaid + #Giveaway (US)

Meet Kimberly:
Kimberly Kincaid writes contemporary romance novels that split the difference between sexy and sweet, taking the traditional idea of boy-meets-girl and infusing it with a sassy magic all her own. She believes in fiery yet flawed characters destined for a crash-course in falling in love-- usually the hard way-- and injects her trademark humor as well as poignant touches into her writing to create her stories.
Kimberly's writing journey has led down some bumpy roads (that first manuscript is under the bed, where it is very likely to stay), but there has been some fresh pavement too (her second manuscript earned her very first contest final, and landed the fantastic Maureen Walters at the Curtis Brown Literary Agency). One thing is certain -- the wild ride of being a writer is a lot richer in both its ups and downs because of friends and readers along the path.

When Kimberly's not sitting cross-legged in an ancient desk chair known as "The Pleather Bomber", she can be found practicing obscene amounts of yoga, whipping up anything from enchiladas to eclairs in her kitchen, or curled up with her nose in a book. She resides in northern Virginia with her wildly patient husband and their three daughters.

Release Day, Or How Everything Comes Full Circle
Before I got The Call, I got A Call, from then-chaptermate (now critique partner and all-around bestie) Avery Flynn. She was the chair for the Washington Romance Writer’s Marlene contest, in which I’d been a finalist at the time. Our phone call that day went something like this:

Avery: “Kimberly, I’ve had a request from the judging editor at Kensington. She’d like to see your full manuscript!”
Me: “Are you *kidding* me?!”
Avery (laughing): “I’m pretty sure I’m not. Would you like to send it to her directly?”
Me: “Sure. And if she buys it, I swear I am taking you to the most swank martini lunch on the face of the earth!”

Fast forward three months, to the day I got The Call. I’m in my office, packing up some last-minute things for RWA’s annual conference (I was leaving 12 hours later). My agent called to tell me that the manuscript (along with the other two in the series) had in fact sold to Kensington. Absolutely shell-shocked, I walked to the kitchen, where my three kids were drawing at the table.

Me: “Oh my gosh, you guys. I sold my books.”
Kids: “You did?”
Me: “Uh. Yes. Yes, I think so (told you. Shell-shocked!)”
Kids: “Mommy sold her books! Mommy sold her books!”
Dancing, squealing, and a massive group hug ensued. My oldest daughter told me she was proud of me, and truth be told, I don’t think I will ever forget that moment.

Fast forward to today. Release day for The Sugar Cookie Sweetheart Swap. What’s the best thing a foodie author could possibly do on her print debut day?

Yep. Best. Lunch. Ever. Special thanks to Avery Flynn, and Chef Cathal Armstrong at Restaurant Eve in Alexandria, VA (who graciously let us peek at the kitchen!) And yes. I highly recommend their dessert!

But the best part of my release day was all about coming full circle. I took my kids to Barnes and Noble, and right there in the front of the store was my book. The book I’d worked hard on, even skipping family dinners and bedtime stories sometimes in order to get it just so. The conversation went like this:
Me: “Oh my gosh, you guys. That’s my book!”
Kids: “It is! It is!”
Dancing, squealing, and a massive group hug ensue. My oldest daughter looks at me and says:
“Mom, look. Your dream came true! I really am proud of you.”
Yep. Never forgetting that moment, either.
