Guest Post: The Anatomy of Writing A Threesome by Roni Loren + #Giveaway (ebook)

Meet Roni:
Roni wrote her first romance novel at age fifteen when she discovered writing about boys was way easier than actually talking to them. Since then, her flirting skills haven’t improved, but she likes to think her storytelling ability has. Though she’ll forever be a New Orleans girl at heart, she now lives in Dallas with her husband and son.

If she’s not working on her latest sexy story, you can find her reading, watching reality television, or indulging in her unhealthy addiction to rockstars, er, rock concerts. Yeah, that's it. She is the National Bestselling Author of The Loving on the Edge series from Berkley Heat and a current RITA finalist for her novel MELT INTO YOU.

To find out more about her serial novel, NOT UNTIL YOU, which is currently releasing in installments once a week, check out this page.

One of my favorite things about writing erotic romance is that I don’t have to stick to strict romance novel conventions of one hero and one heroine having sexy times. I can change it up. I can have two heroes. I can have heroes that not only fall for the heroine but fall for each other as well. It’s fun not having to follow the rules all the time. But with that freedom also comes some pitfalls because adding another person into the dynamic can add a whole host of other issues. So here’s the top five I watch out for when I’m writing a threesome scene or a ménage story.
  1. He/him/who??? - Pronouns can be the enemy. If you have two guys and a girl in the scene, it’s easy to keep track of who the woman is. But use too many he’s and him’s and the reader may be doing the dog head tilt trying to figure out who is where.
  2. Unless she’s a yoga instructor or a gymnast, a woman typically can’t morph into Gumby. – Keeping love scene choreography at least somewhat realistic is a concern for any romance writer because nothing will pull the reader out of a story faster than if the hero and heroine are doing things/positions we know are pretty much impossible. But with a threesome, it becomes even more complicated because, hello, two dudes, one chick, that’s a lot of positioning to figure out. Don’t even ask me what I’ve searched through on Tumblr and Google Images in the name of book research to verify positions can be accomplished. O.o
  3. Do the boys like each other, too? This is a decision that determines if you’re writing M/F/M ménage or M/M/F ménage. I’ve written both. MELT INTO YOU is a M/M/F – the guys interact sexually in the threesome dynamic and in the relationship dynamic. NOT UNTIL YOU, the guys are just friends and are 100% focused on the woman. It’s fun to write either type, but it makes for a very different book depending on which direction you decide on.
  4. Who gets the Happily Ever After? – Once again, you have some choices here. Do all three people end up in a committed ménage relationship? Or is the third party going to move on and leave a primary couple? I can tell you I’ve written both. But I won’t tell you which ones because I don’t want to give away endings. ;)
  5. Emotion, emotion, emotion – Any love scene runs the risk of coming across as porny, but threesome scenes are ten times more likely to read that way if not handled correctly. The key to making sure it doesn’t drift into the bom-chicka-wah-wah zone is to keep a solid focus on emotion in the scene. What is going on in your characters’ heads? Why are they doing this now? How is this moving the plot forward? What are they FEELING (and not just in their special parts)? ;) Make sure those things are covered and you can have a sexy, non-porny, emotional scene.
So that’s what I pay attention to when I’m writing my sexy scenes. Anyone ever get lost when reading a threesome story on who the he was or how they possibly worked out that position? What are some of the best ménage stories you’ve read?
