Interview with Jessica Sorensen + Giveaway (US/CA)

We're kinda getting into this whole New Adult genre and today we have Jessica Sorensen, author of The Secret of Ella and Micha.

WELCOME TO THE BLOG JESSICA!!!

Meet Jessica:
I’m the author of the Fallen Star Series, the Darkness Falls Series, the Death Collectors Series, and the New York Times and USA Today Best Seller, The Secret of Ella and Micha, a New Adult Contemporary novel.

I love writing and reading almost anything that is YA. Some of my favorite authors are Cassandra Clare, Sarah Dessen, Becca Fitzpatrick, Abbi Glines, Tammara Webber, Jamie McGuire and Jennifer L. Armentrout. I’m also an avid watcher of TV series The Vampire Diaries and of Modern Family.

I absolutely love music. When I’m writing, 9 out of 10 times I have music blaring in the background. My list of favorite songs could go on and on, since I have a very broad taste in music. But a few of my favorite bands are Chevelle, Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, Brand New, Death Cab for Cutie, Flight 409, Nirvana, and I’m going to stop there or else I’ll keep going on forever.

I don’t really have any favorite movies, but a few that I could watch over and over again are Anywhere but Here, Juno, Pride and Prejudice, The Hangover, and Bad Teacher.

J&K: Share a little bit about THE SECRET OF ELLA AND MISCHA[no copying blurb :)]
JS:
The Secret of Ella and Micha is about two best friends and both of them have had tough lives. Micha grew without a father and Ella’s mother suffered from a bipolar disorder and her father is an alcoholic.

After Ella’s mother takes her own life, Ella bails and runs away to college without telling Micha where she’s going because she feels guilty about her mother’s death. She’s not only running away from what happened, but from herself kind of.

She’s gone for eight months and during those eight months Micha continues to look for her because he loves Ella. Finally, when summer rolls around, Ella has to return home and face everything she left behind, including Micha, who wants nothing more than his best friend and the girl he loves back. But Micha quickly finds out that the Ella he knew has changed.

Throughout the story, Ella fights who she truly is because she fears she’ll have to feel everything if she lets go. Micha doesn’t think it’s healthy and tries to get her to understand that what happened wasn’t her fault and that holding it in is only hurting her.

J&K: For those unfamiliar with the New Adult genre, can you tell us about it?
JS:
To me, New Adult genre books are about characters who aren’t really considered adolescents, but aren't quite adults yet. The characters are kind of at a complex and emotional stage in their lives and the storylines are for a more mature audience than young adult.

J&K: Which New Adult books would you recommend to readers new to the genre? Besides your own :)
JS:
Since I love to read almost as much as I love to write, I have a ton. Here are a few of my favorites:
Anything by Abbi Glines

J&K: If your book had a theme song, what would it be?
JS:
Either “The Story” by Brandi Carlile or “All the Same” by Sick Puppies.

J&K: Do you have any writing rituals? (blasting music, eating cookies, drinking wine...)
JS:
Music, a lot of sugar and caffeine on hand, and a secluded place. away from distractions.

J&K: What are you writing at the moment? Can you give us a sneak peek into your current WIP?
JS: I just finished up The Redemption of Callie and Kayden. Here’s a tiny sneak peak.
He’s looking at me and I mean really looking at me and there’s this connection, this understanding that we are two people who have been fractured, not by ourselves, but by someone else and we’re doing everything we can not to shatter to pieces.

His arms stay slack to his side as his chest rises and falls. I’m about to give up, back away, and allow myself to cry, when his arms wrap around my waist. He grips me tightly and it gives me hope that maybe there might be some hope left.

He holds me forever with his face nuzzled into my hair. Somewhere along the line it starts to snow, but we don’t move. We are frozen in a moment neither of us wants to leave.

“For how long?” he finally asks, his breath warm against my cheek.

I shut my eyes and bask in the feel of him. “Since it happened.”

His arms tighten around me and he presses my body against his. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s not your fault.” I tenderly run my fingertips up and down his back, working up the courage to ask. “Kayden?”

“Since I was twelve.” He reads my mind and trusts me enough to answer.

I constrict my arms around him, sealing us together in every way possible. Maybe if I try hard enough, we’ll fall into each other and become one single person and we can share our pain instead of caring it ourselves.
