We're helping kick off Kathryn Barrett's official tour for her debut release with Entangled Publishing: Temptation. Please give her a warm welcome.
WELCOME TO THE BLOG KATHRYN!!!
Kathryn Barrett has been writing women’s fiction since the day her youngest daughter left for pre-school. All was going well, until she read a book called “30 Mistakes In Fiction Writing” and realized she was making all of them.
One by one, she’s overcome the mistakes and learned to make a few more along the way. “The best way to learn to write is to write,” she says. “Period.”
Kathryn lives near London in the enchanting countryside of England. When she’s not writing, she’s busy training a rescue dog, tramping around archeological ruins, and occasionally making wine runs to France. Because nothing fuels the imagination like a good Bordeaux.

Sexual Tension in a Buggy
Thanks for having me at Romancing Rakes For The Love of Romance! I’d like to describe one of my favorite scenes in Temptation, and how it came about.
Temptation is a romance set in Amish country, yet it’s not an “Amish romance”, since it does include sex, which would never happen in a typical Amish romance. It was a challenge to know just how far to go, but I discovered that when one character is bound and determined to avoid giving in to temptation, there is plenty of repressed desire to carry the conflict along.
While I was researching Temptation, I visited Holmes County, Ohio, where the largest population of Amish live. I was able to get a buggy driving lesson at one of the homes there, which inspired a scene in the book where Laura gets a lesson from Jacob on how to drive a buggy. His instructions to her were very similar to what I’d been told...except there was no sexual tension during my lesson the way there was with Laura and Jacob!
Here’s an excerpt from that scene. Earlier, Jacob has explained to the budding gardener Laura the old wives’ tale about planting vegetables that “point up” (peas, squash, etc.) while the moon is waxing, or “pointing up”, and vegetables that “point down” (carrots, potatoes, etc.) when the moon is waning, or pointing down.
When they arrived at her drive, Jacob made no move to descend. Laura turned to him and asked lightly, “If we were courting, would you kiss me?”This is only the beginning for poor Jacob! He is tempted many times by Laura, and by the dreams he has of building a house with soaring cathedral ceilings and arching windows, things that are forbidden by the Amish.
Jacob shook his head. “Only in the moonlight.”
“When the moon’s up or down?”
“Full,” he said, though there was no such requirement that he knew of.
She smiled impishly. “The moon’s full tonight. I was wondering what to plant.”
Mischief, he suspected, and as she leaned over and kissed him lightly on the lips, his worst fears were confirmed. He enjoyed the feel of her lips on his, the nearness of her, the brush of her hair on his clean cheek, the pressure of her thigh against his.
He didn’t want it to end, the afternoon, or the kiss. He brought his hand up, holding her chin in place while he kissed her more thoroughly. If he was giving in to temptation, he’d darn well get a good taste of it.
She responded, angling her head to gain better access—and he didn’t care that he’d lost this latest battle.
Building more sandcastles, he thought, letting the almost forgotten desire build, the almost forgotten sensations assemble until they formed a stronghold against reason.
It was forbidden, this desire, these feelings—for a woman who wasn’t of his faith. Forbidden as surely as tongue and groove cathedral ceilings.
But still he dreams...despite knowing his desires are wrong.
What would you do if your dreams—and the woman you loved—were forbidden? Would you defy your religious upbringing to be with the person you loved?
