VBT: Interview with Victoria Vane + Giveaway

We've had Victoria Vane on the blog before sharing her debut book writing as her sexier alter ego (Fortune's Son by Emery Lee). She's been on an EPIC blog tour for her DEVIL DEVERE SERIES since August and today, she's stopping here to answer questions about the series, what's next and sharing excerpts.

WELCOME BACK TO THE BLOG VICTORIA!!!

Meet Victoria:
A lover of history and deeply romantic stories, Victoria combines these elements to craft romantic historical novels and novellas for a mature reading audience. Her writing influences are Georgette Heyer for fabulous witty dialogue and over the top characters, Robin Schone , Sylvia Day, and Charlotte Featherstone for beautifully crafted prose in stories with deep sensuality, and Lila DiPasqua for creative vision in melding history with eroticism. Ms. Vane also writes award nominated romantic historical fiction as Emery Lee.

Jamie and Kati: Who is Victoria Vane?
Victoria Vane:
Victoria Vane began as the erotic pseudonym for historical author Emery Lee, although over time my two writing personas have seemed to converge over time to some degree, as all of my Victoria Vane stories do contain a fairly high degree of historical detail and two of my most recent short stories from the Devilish Vignettes do not even contain a romance per se, but are more character studies to complement the Devil DeVere series.

J&K: Share a little bit about your novellas (no copying blurbs)
VV:
My Devil DeVere series is comprised of four connected novellas that both read as a serial novel but still serve as full and complete stories on their own. The series features six main characters who are all connected in some way to the series namesake characters Viscount Ludovic "The Devil DeVere." The key players as they appear in the stories are:

Viscount Ludovic "the Devil” DeVere: Devious and machinating rakehell, brother to Hew, godfather to Vesta. Ludovic appears in all of the books. In the first two he is a major secondary character but takes center stage in The Devil you Know and The Devil's Match.

Sir Edward “Ned” Chambers : Respectable and celibate widower with a powerful right hook, father to Vesta, best friend to DeVere. The hero of A Wild Night's Bride.

Phoebe Scott “alias” Kitty Willis: Struggling actress with a past, in need of a protector and the heroine of A Wild Night's Bride.

Lady Vesta Chambers: 18-year-old daughter of Sir Edward, spoiled, passionate, willful. Vesta is young and mischievous. The heroine of.

Captain Hewett DeVere: War hero younger brother to the viscount, his opposite in every way. Hew is the reluctant object of Vesta's passion in The Virgin Huntress.

Baroness Diana Palmerston-Wriothesley: Godmother to Vesta, beautiful but embittered widow with several closely guarded secrets. The heroine of both The Devil you Know and The Devil's Match.

Simon Singleton- An aspiring poet, lover of many women and boyhood friend to DeVere and Ned. Simon is featured in my upcoming vignette, The Trouble With Sin and is also the romantic hero in Salime's story.

Salime the Courtesan – A dark and exotic beauty, Salime is a very high level woman of pleasure. She began as a secondary character but now has a book of her own coming in early spring called Jewel of the East.

In the first story, the Hangover-inspired, A Wild Night's Bride, we meet a struggling actress and a grieving widower and the machinating rakehell who brings this unlikely pair together. It is both a comedic and a passionate romp with Phoebe and Ned finding their happy ever after.

In The Virgin Huntress, Vesta is furious that her father would go to London to arrange her come out and return a week later with a bride of his own! When Vesta goes to London with her godmother she is smitten by the first man she encounters who happens to be her godfather Lord DeVere's younger brother but Captain Hew has eyes for another, forcing Vesta to take devilish measures to make him notice her. Vesta is a spoiled brat, but hilariously funny, and the perfect foil for the straight- laced war hero Captain Hewett DeVere.

In The Devil You Know, we travel back in time four years to discover the secret source of bitterness and animosity between Diana and DeVere and the reason DeVere spent four years abroad with no true explanation. This story is fraught with passion and emotion. There is also an element of mystery and intrigue.

As godparents to Vesta, Diana and DeVere are reluctantly reunited through the wedding of Vesta and Hew in The Devil's Match. The antagonism is palpable between them at every meeting, but so is the unresolved sexual tension. But having been burned once, Diana is determined not to repeat her mistakes, even when history seems almost to repeat, bringing past events full circle.

The Devil's Match is by far the most erotic of the stories, but is also an emotionally intense and highly satisfying romance.

Although I had believed the series ended when I wrapped everything up with a neat bow, fans of the series have been crying out for "more DeVere"! Thus, I am thrilled to announce that I am continuing the series with a quartet of shorter vignettes as well as new books in the coming year.

The first of these short stories is Devil in the Making, another comedic romp that serves as both a character study of DeVere, as well as introducing new characters who will appear in future books. The other forthcoming vignettes to be released back-to-back are: The Trouble with Sin, a comedy and character study featuring Simon "Sin" Singleton.

Ned's Folly, a romance featuring a young Ned and Annalee.

A Devil's Touch, an erotic romance vignette featuring Diana and DeVere.

These will be followed by Salime's long-awaited story, Jewel of the East, to be released spring of 2013.

Devil by Another Name and Devil in Diamonds will becoming late 2013 or early 2014.

J&K: What made you decide to release linked novellas instead of a full book?
VV:
It's actually a very long story that began a year and a half ago when I lost my publisher and my agent within just a few weeks. I was really struggling with my career when a friend suggested I write a short romance to submit to a digital publisher just to get myself back on track. I did and received an acceptance from Ellora's Cave on the condition that I would amp up the heat level of my story. This was a huge challenge for someone not comfortable writing explicit sex but I gave it my best try and the result was A Breach of Promise, a fun, witty and scorching hot historical romance novella.

I have since discovered an ability to pack an amazing amount of story into the abbreviated novella format which has also allowed me to write a good number of books in a very short time(250,000 words and eight titles in the past year!) and get my career back into gear.

J&K: For those who have never read any of your books, which one would you recommend they start with?
VV:
A Wild Night's Bride! It's first in the DeVere series and such a fun and sexy story.

While each of the DeVere books technically can stand alone, they really should be read in order to appreciate the character arcs.

J&K: What's the one romance book everyone should read?
VV:
I always hate to answer these kinds of questions because tastes vary so much. I will instead tell you that some of my favorite romances are: Venetia by Georgette Heyer, Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, Flowers Fromm the Storm by Laura Kinsale, and Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase. For more of my favorites, readers can visit me at Goodreads where I host the Romantic Historical Fiction Lovers Group. http://

J&K: What are you currently working on? Can you give us a sneak peek?
VV:
I am excited to mention that I have a full length single titles release coming in January from Entangled Publishing's new Scandalous historical imprint. The title is Treacherous Temptation, a darkly erotic romance loosely inspired by Dangerous Liaisons. It has elements of intrigue and is set in the Georgian era.

Here's the "unofficial" blurb:
A reluctant heiress resigned to her fate … Mary Elizabeth Edwardes has one of the largest fortune's in England, but has no desire to leave her quiet country existence… and even less to acquire a husband she cannot choose for herself.

A dissolute nobleman bent on retribution … Trapped in a duplicitous existence since scandal destroyed his fortune and family name, Lord Hadley Blanchard has spent the better part of a decade posing as a disaffected exile while spying and seducing in the service of the English Crown.

A dangerous game of seduction, and intrigue … When summoned from abroad by a former lover, Lord Hadley perceives an opportunity for vengeance at last. By employing the full measure of his seductive charm, he woos the ward of the man who destroyed his life, little knowing that winning Mary's fortune will mean risking his own treacherous heart.
Lastly, and this is HUGE! I have a surprise that I have been holding very close for some time. I have recently commissioned an amazing artist to render gorgeously detailed full color illustrations for my DeVere stories! My goal is to offer a wonderfully enhanced reading experience to fans of my series. The first book to be illustrated just in time for all those glorious full color and graphics capable Christmas e-readers, is Devil in the Making, The Illustrated Edition. This book will feature a gorgeous depiction of the key scene in every chapter. If this experiment is successful, I will be illustrating the entire DeVere series (old and new) over the next 12-18 months. I am attaching a sample of the absolutely stunning photorealistic artwork that will grace the new book cover as well as the inside pages! (Cool! We checked out the rest of the vignettes. It reminds us of our favorite Illustrated Romance.)

What happens when a struggling actress and a grieving widower come together in a night of unbridled debauchery orchestrated by a bored and machinating rake? With the devil in charge — there will surely be hell to pay!

DeVere, on the other hand, evinced no such qualms. He had already loosened his cravat and was stripping off his coat.

"As I said earlier, there is no need," Phoebe insisted. "A couple of buttons and a raised petticoat are all the business requires."

"How delightfully unromantic you are, my dear!" He chuckled. "But while most men would be charmed to comply with your simple wishes, I have quite another game in mind. One that most definitely requires you to disrobe."

"But what if I don't want to?"

"Oh but you will," he said with a smug smile.

She glared. "You are very sure of yourself!"

He studied his buffed fingernails. "I am sure of Ned. Thus, we must put on a convincing show."

Her brows came together in a deep scowl. "What do you mean? What has Ned to do with this?"

"Everything. And at any moment, I expect him to burst through that door like a raging bull."

Desperate times call for devilish measures…Lady Vesta Chambers is accustomed to getting what she wants, but when the object of her passion has eyes for another, it’s time to take matters in hand!

"But it is so large and swollen, is it painful?

"No, just uncomfortable. Now, may we stop discussing my …" the appropriate word for feminine ears failed him.

"Phallus?" she offered. "That is what the grooms call it."

"Why are you eavesdropping on grooms?"

"I used to watch the stallions leaping the mares."

"You what!" Hew almost choked.

"Well, how else is a girl with no mother supposed to get any education? Although I doubt Mama would have told me very much. So there's really no reason to be timid, Hew. I already know all about the mating process. And to the best of my knowledge, the stallions never 'ignored it until it went away.' Please feel free to relieve yourself of it. I would even help you if you would like. I'm not the least afraid for I have seen much larger ones."

When dealing with the devil it's easy to be burned…especially when passion ignites the flames…

Beautiful, respectable, and dutiful, Lady Diana Palmerston-Wriothesley has long resigned herself to her loveless marriage …until her husband's gambling pushes them to the brink of ruin. Viscount Ludovic, "The Devil DeVere", is a man accustomed to taking what he wants according to his whim until he encounters a woman who won't be had at any price. But will a single night of heavenly passion damn them both forever?

She wanted him too. He could see it in the rapid rise of her breasts. He could smell her budding arousal and would relish bringing her to full bloom. God, how he loved this dance! She had taken the first tentative steps, yet she still fought her desire, refused to give in to it, but he would lead her now. He was a master…and a ruthless bastard.

He moved behind her, his fingers riffled gently through her hair. He closed his eyes to inhale her faint rose scent mixed with womanly musk. He dipped his head, letting his breath tickle her ear. She shivered. He whispered low and sultry. "Do you wish me to name the ways I can please you? I am delighted to comply if that excites you...although it would please me far more to demonstrate."

Once burned twice shy… but when old flames come together…passion reignites...

DeVere rose and came to her, perching himself on the arm of the settle. "My honorable and straitlaced brother could never satisfy a woman like you, Diana. He could never plumb the depths of your passion...unlock your secret desires."

His voice was low and seductive, and the flickering blue fire in his eyes heated her insides. Diana fiercely tamped down the smoldering sensation that threatened to reignite feelings she'd struggled to suppress. "And what would you know of my wants and desires after four years?"

"A great deal." He gave her a slow, confident smile. "Given that I was the one to unleash them."

Diana averted her face with a bitter laugh. "Thus you presume to have an exclusive claim to me?"

"Has any other exerted one?" he asked softly. He reached out a hand and traced a long, manicured finger along her jaw. "You are still unwed, Diana. Have you taken another lover in my absence?"

"It is none of your business whether I have or not, and you are grossly impertinent to ask."

He laughed long and low. "I think I have my answer."

She glared at him, and thus they remained, silently challenging one another for an interminable beat. Then suddenly his mouth was on hers, taking, possessing, as if it was indeed, his singular privilege.

Diana leaned into him, teasing his lower lip with her tongue and sucking it eagerly into her mouth before sinking her teeth into it. Hard. Savoring the coppery taste of his blood.

"What the hell!" DeVere jerked back with a cry. He touched his lip and examined the crimson stain on his fingertip, his expression a mix of outrage and bemusement.

"You took without invitation," Diana said. "It was a warning not to do so again."
