Prima ballerina Catriona de Dovia lives the glamorous life of a starlet, filled with glittering jewels, sumptuous dinners, and admiring suitors. She’s grown up considerably since losing her heart to Hugh Curzon once upon a time, no longer wasting her emotions on the empty promises of charming gentlemen.

Scotland Yard Agent Phineas Gunn–sometimes known as Hugh Curzon has been unable to forget the trusting, beautiful Cate since he had to leave her behind in Barcelona. When Cate’s ballet company arrives in London, Scotland Yard asks Finn to investigate the premier dancer. It doesn’t take him long to suspect that Cate is more than a ballet girl––in fact, she just might be a jewel thief, or even more arousing––a clever undercover operative.

Finn is determined to find out as the two race across the Continent–by land, by sea, even through the air by zephyr–it becomes uncertain who is keeping tabs on whom, and Finn and Cate must battle the sexual tension that snaps and sizzles between them every step of the way.

19 Chester Square
London, SW
17 September 1886
I am safely returned to London, and yet I am filled with yearning and burdened by a heavy heart. I waited for you at Café Almirall in Barcelona, and returned several evenings thereafter in hopes of seeing you again. As you well know, my attempts to contact you were rebuffed and my wires and notes received no reply. Only when I received orders to return to headquarters immediately did I leave Spain, and I did so reluctantly.

I feel compelled to disclose to you that I am an intelligence operative for Special Branch Scotland Yard and on occasion, Naval Intelligence Division. When we met in Barcelona, I was tracking a shipment of explosives that ended up in a Beziers safe house. At this point, I assume you are aware of my involvement in the farmhouse explosion. I was a part of a bilateral covert operation with French forces, and to my regret, several members of Los Tigres were killed, including your brother, Eduardo de Dovia.

It must also confess, that as a part of my assignment, I devised to meet you, in hopes that you might unwittingly divulge information that would assist operatives in the pursuit of the illegal dynamite as well as the whereabouts of Los Tigres anarchists. Please be assured that we obtained the location of the hideout in Beziers. France, from an undercover informant, and that you in no way contributed to your brother’s demise.

I take full responsibility for the unnecessary hostilities that took place at the farmhouse. There is more in the way of explanation, but I have already disclosed too much to you. I can only say how sorry I am and to assure you that I did my utmost to curtail an overzealous assault that ended in tragedy.

Despite the fact that we met under less than honest circumstances, you have inspired an attachment of profound and lasting effect. What a joy it was to discover that I am in love with you Catriona de Dovia Willoughby, though my fear is that any chance of happiness for us has been forever dashed by my involvement in your brother’s death.

I harbor no hopes of rekindling your affection, but I do pray you might one day see fit to forgive me.

With fondest love,

P.S. I post this letter to you in care of the Théâtre de l’Académie Royal de Musique, Paris France, in the hope that you receive it.

On her own since the untimely death of her parents, she will do anything for the only family she has left: her brother, a notorious anarchist.

Scotland Yard Agent Phineas Gunn—sometimes known as Hugh Curzon—receives his new assignment reluctantly. He’s up for something a little more strenuous than playing nanny to a ballerina, until he sees who his charge is. Then, it’s a completely different story, because he’d been unable to forget the trusting, beautiful Cate since he had to leave her behind in Barcelona.

As the two race across the Continent—by land, by sea, even through the air by zephyr—it becomes uncertain who is keeping tabs on whom, and Finn and Cate must battle the sexual tension that snaps and sizzles between them every step of the way.

    1. Hi Joy,

My sister's name is Joy. I dedicated book #2 in the Scotland Yard series to her.

I tried to write the love letters as a kind of prologue to A Private Duel with Agent Gunn. I do hope you get a chance to see how Finn and Cate work through their troubles!

      Also...I adore Jo Beverly!

  6. Hmmm... The guy on the front of the cover for A PRIVATE DUAL WITH AGENT GUNN looks like Ian Somerhalder from the TV series Vampire Diaries. I like the cover art for your books by the way whether its him or not * winks*
I guess as far as couples go...lets see I'm going with some classic movies starring Rock Hudson and Doris Day. I think they made the cutest movies.
    Thanks

The model portraying Agent Gunn is Paul Marron, who has a fan club of romance readers who collect all his covers! And I do think Ian makes a beautiful vampire!

I caught a little Pillow Talk between Rock Hudson and Doris Day over the weekend...very cute!

  15. This sounds like a really good story. I love when characters have secrets and this sounds like it would be very interesting to see how/if the the heroine can forgive the hero for his part in her brother's death, even though it seems like he tried as much as possible to prevent his death.
