Hello! Thanks so much for having me as a guest today, Jamie and Kati! I’m so happy to be here!

The Appeal of Second Chance Romance

I don’t know about you, but I love seconds…

Second helpings, you know in case you didn’t get enough of your favorite food or missed something because your plate was full the first time.

Second wind, because when I’m running and I’m only half way to finishing the miles I want that day and my legs are tired and my breathing is uneven and I want to walk the rest of the way, I appreciate that kick that shows up just in time to propel me further.

Second thoughts, because I am the queen of leaping without thinking and while that can be good, it can also mean volunteering to do something that I really have no business doing. (Although, anyone who wants to take me skydiving, I am so there!)

But my favorite second is second chances—especially in romance novels. There’s something about a shared past, about having history with someone, that gets me every time. When a hero and heroine are reunited, it’s hotter, riskier, crazier. They try and fight the attraction, but just can’t stay from each other. And I love that!

In my most recent release, Yours At Midnight, my hero and heroine haven’t seen each other in four years. Not since the death of someone they both loved. Not since their one night stand. From the second they lay eyes on each other again there is tension. Delicious tension that I had the best time writing. They’ve known each other since they were kids, grew up next door to each other, so there’s a lot of history between them. And I think that’s fascinating. And really hard to ignore.

When I meet a hero and heroine who know each other, something tugs on my heart right away. I immediately want to know what happened between them and will they get past it so they can be together now. There’s already a layer of attachment, an invisible string that I want them to tie in a knot and hold onto forever. It might be buried or forgotten, but it’s there and watching them rediscover each other is great fun.

Romances that include a first meet are wonderful—I gobble them up! But when two people are given a second chance, when they have to face their mistakes and regrets and deep-rooted beliefs and make a change to achieve a happily ever after? I think that’s pretty darn appealing.

I’d love to hear your thoughts. What do you think about second chance romance?

YOURS AT MIDNIGHT:
Lyric Whetsone only had eyes for Quinn Sobel's brother Oliver, until a car crash took Oliver's life on New Year's Eve. Then, a moment of shared grief between Quinn and Lyric became something more impassioned, something that frightened Quinn so much he ran from Lyric's bed and her life, disappearing for four long years.

Now Quinn's back for another New Year's Eve, struggling for closure, desperate to leave his grief in the past and make amends with the girl of his dreams.

But Lyric has a secret--one that could drive Quinn from her life forever. Will Quinn run away from the love and acceptance he's always wanted...or will he claim his New Year's kiss and make her his at midnight?

  1. I so agree about second chances. I didn't personally see that. But, I love a movie or book that way, hadn't really thought about it until you mentioned it. Yep, I would definitely agree, there is more sizzle factor!

  2. Hi Kelly! "more sizzle factor" - a great way to put it! It's hot when a couple's eyes meet for the first time, but when a couple's eyes meet who have history, and thoughts of their past flood their mind, that can be even hotter, I think. :) Thanks for commenting!

    1. Hi Josie! I think you've hit it right on the head - usually the couple *is* more mature and ready to handle things they might not have been when they were younger. Thanks for stopping by!

  6. It depends how it's done :D if it's meant to be and flows beautifully then I love second chance romance. Also I think those are the type of books that can be very heartwarming and exciting!

  8. I love 2nd chance romances! There are more 2nd chance relationships in real-life than not, and I think romances that feature this show that love and understanding really can overcome a lot of issues. IMHO, a 2nd chance romance seems so much more sincere than the "perfect love from the get go" story. Its great to see 2 strong characters work through their issues to get what they really want!

    1. Hi Michelle! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts - I completely agree. And that's a great word - sincerity. I do love romances that start with strangers hot and heavy, but when a couple already knows each other, there's something already deeper in play and that just ups the will they/won't they factor for me.

  9. 2nd chances are amazing. There is already history and heat, but also a conflict.

  14. I like second chance romances because normally the first time is when they are still young and normally don't know what they want and then they come together after they have grown into themselves!

    What a great post!!
I love all of the "seconds" you mentioned (although, you know I'm not a runner like you, so it's been a while since I got a second wind...LOL).
Your romance novellas are FABULOUS!! So excited for you on the release of this one ;).

  17. I love second chance stories. You can't always get it right the first time, often something will happen but the feelings and attraction is still there and when you come together again you have that chance to get it right this time.

  18. I do love the 2nd chance stories, although if too much time goes by, I sort of feel bad about the characters wasting so much time that they could have been together. It sort of breaks your heart if it is 10 or 15 years. The HEA is the main thing, though!

    1. Hi Sharlene! Great point, but the HEA *is* definitely all that matters. Thanks for commenting!

  19. I do love the second chance at love trope. There is something about already knowing a lot about the person you are falling in love with again, you have a history together, you know embarrassing childhood things, you know his family and friends already. So this time, you have to work on what made you break up back then, and really commit yourself to making it right, making it work.

  20. Hi Robin,

You are a new-to-me author and I just discovered your tour. After reading a little about it, I have to say, it sounds like a winning story. Yes, I like second chances, especially in romance books. Often makes me wish for a time machine...so I could go back and have one or two second chances too. But, alas, it's not to be.

Congratulations on the release of your book.

    1. Hi Mary! Oh, that is fun to read, isn't it?

  22. A shot at a second chance depends on the reason why the couple went their separate ways the fist time. If one of the party did something horrible to the other, there should not be any second chances.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Anne! True - but sometimes life is messy and hard and we don't always make the best decisions, right? I definitely agree if that something horrible is physical, but feelings and emotions and mistakes made when the heart is hurting sometimes really hurt another person and I love reading when those people can get back to each other and forgive.

    1. Hi Ashley! I think there is definitely warmth and depth to a second chance story right off the bat that isn't there when the story is about a couple just meeting. There's *so* many emotions, really, besides just attraction, which is great fun to read. Thank you for stopping by!

      Delete
  27. I like second chance romances because there is already a history and a relationship so the emotions seem very real.

    1. Hi Maureen! I agree. History lends itself very nicely to emotional ties that are real and genuine and often full of conflict. Which always makes me super eager to turn the pages to see how things turn out. :) Thanks for stopping by!

  28. I totally agree! I love second chances, especially second chances at love. I think it's something that appeals to a lot of people -- that idea that we can start over, that we haven't really messed up, that something that didn't work out still has a chance.
