A courtesan who only wants to fall in love and get married? A Duke so caught up in a routine and only wants to marry for the purpose of carrying on his lineage? A mysterious man named Lucifer who is looking for diamonds? Welcome to Shana Galen's first book in the Jewels of the Ton series.
William Henry Charles Arthur Cavington, Viscount Southerby, Marquess of Rothingham, and sixth Duke of Pelham aka the Dangerous Duke has always led a life of punctuality and routine. Never too late, never too early. Exactly on time. Upholding propriety and never embroiling himself in scandal is what is required of the Dukes of Pelham.
Enter Juliette, the Duchess of Dalliance. She's one of three well known and sought after courtesans, The Three Diamonds. Along with her friends Fallon (Marchioness of Mystery) and Lily(Countess of Charm) they are the mistresses of the Earl of Sin. But appearances can be deceiving. Each woman has quite the life story.
The gossip papers have paired the Dangerous Duke and the Duchess of Dalliance. One problem? They've never actually met until the night of the ball at Carlton House. Pelham is only attending because of his fiancee. Juliette wants to give the ton what they've been reading about in the papers: the Duke and the Duchess in the same room. Well, it goes partially as planned. They do end up at the same ball but Pelham pretty much gives her The Cut Direct. Then to top it off, Juliette witnesses Pelham's fiancee secretly meeting another man and getting killed for lying about not having "the diamonds". This turn of events bring Pelham and Juliette together whether they like it or not. At first Pelham is skeptical but as the pieces fall in to place, he wants to find out who this mysterious Lucifer is.
Juliette is set upon by Lucifer looking for diamonds. She adamantly denies having them but Lucifer will have none of it. She sends her servants off to their families, her friends to the country and finds herself at the doorstep of Will (as how he shall be referred to for the rest of this review). Will agrees to letting her stay for one night but there is an instant attraction between them. The only thing to do? Deny, deny, deny. Like that will really work.
The danger is closing in and Juliette and Will are growing closer. Juliette knows she cannot allow herself to fall in love with Will and Will knows that having any feelings of affection for Juliette is not a choice. Their worlds are very different yet they share a common bond.
With Juliette's past catching up to her, the ever present ghost of Will's father, Lucifer looking for diamonds and this growing attraction, will these two ever realize that a courtesan and a Duke can fall in love? Will they let society dictate the rules or will they follow their hearts?
And get ready to swoon when Will makes "The Grand Gesture". You'll fall in love with him all over again. I promise :)
He tightened his hands on his knees. What was wrong with him? He couldn't kiss her. She wasn't an acceptable kissing partner in the least. She was a courtesan—a whore. She seduced men for money, and he was falling under her spell.Overall: I loved the fact that Juliette knew that she wanted more than what her current life had to offer. She was even willing to put everything out there for Will since it was the first time she ever felt strongly about a man. Will's perfectly imperfect life made me want to hug and shake him at the same time. And I also had several "ahaaa" moments. *sigh* Shana Galen has done it again. She's made me pull an all-nighter with this book. Fast paced action, smoldering attraction, sexy love scenes, a perfectly imperfect hero, a headstrong heroine and several revelations that will keep you guessing. Ms. Galen has such a way of endearing the characters to the reader. Making us feel what they feel and wanting desperately to make them see that it's okay to fall in love, to let someone in. I am eagerly awaiting IF YOU GIVE A RAKE A RUBY. Is it here yet?
