Studio Smexy Saturdays: Cover Comparison + Giveaway (International)

A lot goes into the making of a cover. It just doesn't come out all purty and completely abtastic. Okay, it's probably totally abtastic to begin with thanks to the cut model who has worked hard to keep his body in shape and keep us drooling at the cover long after we're done reading it. It takes a whole village to make an eye-catching cover that will make you pick it up just because the colors pop or the abs just yell your name. (You know what we're talking about. Uh huh, keep telling yourself that it doesn't...) Today we're sharing side-by-side comparisons of the unedited image with the final cover.
A note from Jenn: There's a lot that goes into making a cover. Models, makeup artists, costumers, directors, photographers, and that's just to get the image. Then that image is off to the designer to make even MORE magic happen. What happens between the two is absolutely amazing and I can't wait to see the results. Every time I have an image purchase come through I get chills. I LOVE seeing what artists can do with my work.

So we thought we'd share a post of nothing but the comparisons. Really they highlight the work the designers do, but it gives you a chance to see the raw image as well. Because sometimes you just don't know how much has happened between step A and step Z.

  10. I have to say that the hot guys are my favorites. Whether in an open shirt or no shirt, a cover with a gorgeous chest/abs will get my attention quickly. Add a tattoo/piercing and I love it even more ;)

  12. I just like the cover to portray the style of the story - tho I do enjoy an attractive man on it. Oh, and I like the features of the model to match the description of the character in the book, at least by hair color.

  14. No faces or only half faces, hands, skin, low lighting. I saw one once, the woman was not skinny, but lovely skin, one of his hands holding her wrists above her head, his other arm across her breasts, he stood behind her, her head tipped back, he was kissing the back of her neck, you could only see chins....I can still see the picture in my head, very sexy. Clothes, no clothes...only shadows

  16. Amazing to see what can be done and changed in a picture. I love seeing the before and after, things I would never think of changing make a huge difference. Thanks for posting! Fun to see!
    For historicals I love the man and woman embracing (no full faces), beautiful dress and some muscles. =)

    I'm partial to the PNR/UF covers w/ dark and brooding male or female torsos w/ various weaponry or tattoos in martial art poses :) And for my HR, it's the beautiful dress half falling off w/ a half naked guy behind her :)

  20. Unless I'm in the mood for a historical romance, I don't really like the flowing dresses and make up.. I like the more mordern photo look that really shows off the guys! Although, I tend to like the ones where their faces are partially or completely hidden. Makes it easier for the cover to match the image you get from reading.

  21. My "top" favorite (hee, hee) is the cover showing just the chest or back of a man. He can be bare-chested or wearing a tight t-shirt. I love to see the muscles!

  23. There are so many that I appreciate and ogle, but my favorite is probably a couple embraced, sometimes scantily clad. Though, I do love those bare chested and bare backed men! ;)

  24. Wow! Love seeing the transitions from photos to covers. I really enjoy covers that have a castle or other scene in the distance, with a colorful dress or kilt with a couple or pretty girl.

  27. A hot guy on the cover, cowboy, vampire, highlander, it doesn't matter. I really love all of them, but I like a guy on the cover to help me get an idea of the character...

  28. depends on the books. if it's historicals, flowing dress is my favorite. suspense, a dark and mysterious one. but basically, i like all kind :D

  30. I don't have a type like cowboys or sci-fi that I like the most. For me, a cover needs to be graphically interesting and I love movement. For instance, the cover for Rocky Mountain Angel is amazing because it looks like the couple was caught mid-movement. Now that I have seen the full, unedited picture the final version is even more amazing because you didn't need the whole body in order to capture "that moment".

  34. This is really a tough question. My favorite cover is one that can make me go OMG!!! and start licking it. Usually has some male muscles involved that are uncovered.

  41. I loved the covers the most that had both the hero and heroine.

    I must admit that I was really impressed with the added "backgrounds" shown here and on your covers shown on "The Illustrated Romance" link! I never have any problem picking out books with your covers just for that reason!

    Preferably with couples or a strong and sexy man.

  43. I love Historicals and my favorite is of the heroine on the cover in a period appropriate dress. Of course, I also like a clinch of the H/H then in the step back. ;)
