WELCOME TO THE BLOG JILLIAN!!!
Meet Jillian:
In 2010, Jillian won the RWA Golden Heart for An Affair with Mr. Kennedy and went from no agent or publisher to signing with Richard Curtis and being offered a three book contract by Pocket Books. That same summer another manuscript, The Seduction of Phaeton Black, won the erotica category of the 2010 Romance Through the Ages contest and was offered a three book contract by Kensington Brava. Needless to say, she has been busy writing books this past year and a half! Jillian lives in Southern California and is currently working on synopses for three more adventures in The Gentlemen of Scotland Yard series.

Love on the Run with Detective Lewis. A Victorian Road Trip.
Some books seem to write themselves. Other stories, for whatever reason, seem to need more fussing over. My more trying manuscripts insist I take more time working out the plot twists or the relationship and character arcs. A DANGEROUS LIAISON WITH DETECTIVE LEWIS was one of those books that just seemed to take on a life of it’s own.
Does that mean I never ran into troubled waters writing the manuscript? No, it doesn’t. During the writing of A DANGEROUS LIAISON WITH DETECTIVE LEWIS I was stymied several times by either the pacing or the romance plot. In fact, I did two edits on the manuscript––so why do I say that this book was such a pleasure to write? I guess it’s because even as the author I was drawn into Fanny and Rafe’s story.
Here’s the blurb:
When Fanny Greyville-Nugent's father suffers a gruesome death in the clutches of his own machine, mourning his loss is not the beautiful heiress's only heartbreak. Scotland Yard is convinced he was targeted in a plot to halt the rise of industry, and Fanny's former fiancé, dashing and dubious detective Raphael "Rafe" Lewis, has been assigned to the case.
For the estranged ex-lovers, bringing the notorious assassins to justice proves as tumultuous as quelling pent-up desires. Fighting peril and passion at every turn of a dangerous journey from Edinburgh to London, they are pursued by an anarchist group hell-bent on destroying her father's mysterious entry into the London Industrial Exposition.
When an astonishing discovery about the couple's failed engagement surfaces, the sleuthing duo realize they can trust no one. Rafe confesses new details about his infidelity and Fanny risks all to avenge her father's murder. But will Rafe and Fanny triumph over the pain of their past?
Part of the fun of this story is that Fanny and Rafe are on the run for the better part of the novel. By train, velocipede, landship and submersible and along the way, they meet a number of helpful and not so helpful characters. Without being a spoiler, I’d love to share a few factoids about the assortment of conveyances––some of them rather odd, the hero and heroine use to escape from their pursuers.

Train
By 1887, the network of trains and train tracks crisscrossing Britain was comprehensive, but disjointed. Because the railroads were built and owned by private investment syndicates, there wasn’t much standardization. The train track gauges were different, requiring locomotives and cars to be custom built for each section of privately owned railway. And since one railroad company couldn’t use another’s tracks, this also might require passengers to change trains along the route to their destination. Railroad investment syndicates often went bankrupt, sometimes before the new route was even finished. On the upside? Rail speed. In A DANGEROUS LIAISON WITH DETECTIVE LEWIS, Rafe boards the early train in London and arrives in Edinburgh in time for a funeral in the afternoon.

Velocipede
According to Wikipedia, velocipede is an umbrella term for any human-powered land vehicle with one or more wheels. The most common type of velocipede is the bicycle. At one point in their escape, Fanny and Rafe use bicycles to put a bit of distance between themselves and their pursuers.

Landship
This highly experimental, prototype of a pedrail landship plays an interesting part in the novel, helping to get Fanny and Rafe from Edinburgh to Glasgow. Sorry I can’t be any more specific about this giant war engine’s role in the novel, but I can tell you that these landships were the precursors to the tank and were first put to use in World War I.

Submersible
One of the more colorful supporting characters in A DANGEROUS LIAISON WITH DETECTIVE LEWIS, in an inventor who joins Fanny and Rafe in their increasingly perilous journey to London. One of his inventions is a three man submersible that he plans on entering in the London Industrial Exposition. The sub plays a key role in the story, but alas, that is all I can say. My lips are sealed.
I wrote A DANGEROUS LIAISION WITH DETECTIVE LEWIS to be a suspenseful page turner with a hero who has a lot to prove as well as make up for and a heroine who is up for both the romance and adventure. As a film student, I studied all of Alfred Hitchcock’s work and I particularly admire the romantic suspense films: Rear Window, North by Northwest, and To Catch a Thief. Thrills, chills, adventure––perhaps there’s a mystery to uncover, or a villain to capture, but at the story’s core, there is always a love story.

Honestly, I don't know to many suspense romance in movies. I have a couple of them on my kindle, but I haven't gotten to read them. I know I should hang my head down in shame. I will get to them.
ReplyDeleteOh you know them, but you may not think of them as romantic suspense. I think a movie everyone knows is Romancing the Stone, but my favorites are some of Alfred Hitchcock's: Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, North by Northwest.
DeleteI love Romancing the Stone. That movie is fabulous.
DeleteIndiana Jones has a bit of romance, so I think that would be my favorite movie. However, The Seduction of Phaeton Black is my favorite suspense romance novel. I have been looking forward to your next book in this series. Best Wishes on the release!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Betty!
DeleteThe Moonstone and Miss Jones releases in late September, so you don't have long to wait.
Hmm, I'm not a big fan of Romantic Suspense in books (I'm too wimpy), but I love the Bourne series, and I can't wait to see the new one with Jeremy Renner! Woot!
ReplyDeleteOh me too! Love the Bourne series.
DeleteFavorite romantic suspense is actually an older black and white film noir film - Laura starring Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews and of course I'm a huge fan of any of the Alfred Hitchcock films...most of them have a romance in the story and a lot of suspense
ReplyDeleteYou and me both! I just can't seem to write a story without a mystery for the hero and heroine to solve or a villain to catch or run from!
DeleteCongrats on the newest release!!! I'm so excited cuz I just got An Affair w/ Mr. Kennedy and I can't wait to read it :)
ReplyDeleteummmm... I love Romantic suspense in books and movies. I haven't read any in a while, been on a PNR and HR kick lately but I love Elizabeth Lowell.
Lowell is a terrific suspense writer, but glad your on an HR kick! I do hope you enjoy Mr. Kennedy enough to go to Rafe and Fanny's adventure.
DeleteOne of the best suspense books that I read was Jamaica Inn. I know, it's a really old book, but it definitely kept me in suspense and guessing who the villian was, right upto the end. Daphne Du Maurier was an amazing Author.
ReplyDeleteI loved "An Affair with Mr. Kennedy" and "The Seduction of Phaeton Black".
Thank you so much, Diana. I am so glad you enjoyed both novels. Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier is a great choice. Did you know it was made into a movie by Alfred Hitchcock...who else? The only reason I know this little esoteric bit is because I studied film in college!
DeleteA couple of my favorite romantic suspense movies are "The Thomas Crown Affair" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith."
ReplyDeleteI am so intrigued by the premise of this book!

DeleteSorry, I had a typo in my answer and though I could fix it!
DeleteI set out to write a story where the hero and heroine have to find a way back to loving each other in the midst of being chased from Edinburgh to London.
I love both your picks for romantic suspense, by the way.
The Thomas Crowne Affair with Pierce Brosnan & Rene Russo?! Oh....My....Gosh....Hot, hot, hot and great suspense, fun, great movie.
ReplyDeleteJillian, you have wonderful covers!! I have not read your stories. But the covers are fantastic!

The Thomas Crowne Affair was definitely hot! I do hope you get chance to read the series, I think you'd like it alot!
DeleteI am fully aware that the cover gods have smiled on me for this series!
My favorite romantic - suspense is a movie: Hitchcock's "Vertigo". It's a little out of date but the story of romantic obsession and misery is just stunning and unforgettable.

One of Hitchcock's darker romantic suspense stories but, I think it is listed in like the top ten of greatest suspense films ever!
DeleteYou have to probably be a fan of vintage movies or a "senior citizen" like me to be familiar with my favorite suspense/romance movie which is “To Catch a Thief” which stared the iconic Cary Grant and Grace Kelly!
ReplyDeleteI am absolutely familiar with To Catch a Thief! A classic and there is that wonderful fireworks love scene? Hot, hot, hot!
DeleteI think that my favorite books are the JD Robb series...that combine a mystery with the searing romance between Eve & Roarke. Thank you for visiting.
ReplyDeleteYou can't talk about romantic suspense without mentioning Eve and Roarke! What a terrific series!
DeleteHi
ReplyDeleteI love romantic suspense along with many other genres. Not sure what my favorite one is, I love the KGI series by Maya Banks and I just read a good one by Ellis Vidler called Cold Comfort, I also loved An Affair with Mr Kennedy.
I am looking forward to reading more of your series (also enjoyed The Seduction of Phaeton Black).
Thanks for the chance

Thanks Pamerd,
DeleteMaya Banks is a force in so many subgenres of romance! And I am so happy you enjoyed both Phaeton Black and Mr. Kennedy. Two very different heroes LOL!
Haven't read much romantic suspense, but I do enjoy watching it... Loved The Thomas Crown Affair!
ReplyDeleteHi yadkny,
ReplyDeleteThe Thomas Crown Affair is coming up the favorite I think!
Congrats on the new release, Jillian. My favorite romantic suspense novel is "Breaking Point" by Pamela Clare. I actually love all her books in the I Team series.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jane, I'm not familiar with Pamela Clare's I Team series, but I looked her up and the series looks fantastic!
DeleteI have to be on board with the Thomas Crown Affair myself I have had a thing for Pierce Brosnan since I was a little girl watching Moonlighting :O) Carin
ReplyDeletemawmom(at)gmail(dot)com
Carin,The Thomas Crown Affair is a great choice.
DeleteI love Karen Rose's books. I know that they are more suspense than romance. The stories are just so...amazing! jepebATverizonDOTnet
ReplyDeleteThere are different levels of romance in romantic suspense, it seems. Some are very light on romance. I try to balance the two and believe me it's a juggling act!
DeleteMy favorite romantic suspense movie is: North by Northwest -with Cary Grant & Eva Marie Saint and television show is:
ReplyDeleteRemington Steele - with Stephanie Zimbalist & Pierce Brosnan.
North by Northwest is one of my favorites, as well. For something spy related that was very sexy was Daniel Craig and Eva Green in Casino Royale. I'm such a fan girl of Eva Green's real breasts. Does that sound wierd? I may have to blog on it, lol!
DeleteHonestly, I have nothing against boob jobs anymore, I guess I have capitulated to the trend, But I do like the slope of a woman's breasts and how they move when not filled with plastic bags!
Okay, enough of that rant!
Cry No More by Linda Howard is one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering when someone would mention Linda Howard! One of my favs: All the Queen's Men.
DeleteMy favorite is Charade, an old one with Audrey Hepburn and Carey Grant. A great romantic suspense.
ReplyDeleteJillian I love your books! And the crazy things you come up with =) I wouldn't mind being on the run if I get to travel in style like your characters!
Hi Lexi H,
ReplyDeleteGreat choice! Cary Grant is in so many romantic suspense classics: North by Northwest, To Catch a Thief, Charade. And with such gorgeous leading ladies! Grace Kelly, Eva Marie Saint and Audrey Hepburn.
I have a feeling you're going to enjoy A DANGEROUS LIAISON WITH DETECTIVE LEWIS!
Loved so many of the stories already mentioned - right now I'm watching the last episode of 'The Closer' - lots of suspense & a bit of romance.
ReplyDeleteHi Di,
DeleteI never followed The Closer but I think Kyra Sedgwick is a wonderful actress!
Hope you get a chance to enjoy one of the detective's stories.
One of my favorite romantic suspense stories is Open Season by Linda Howard.
ReplyDeleteLinda Howard's All the King's Men is a favorite of mine. Thanks for commenting!
DeleteA couple of my favorites are North by Northwest and The Mummy with Brendan Fraser (with a a little comedy too!)
ReplyDeleteThere has to be some humor in romantic suspense. I think it adds another emotion to the mix.
DeleteOne of the best thing about the Mummy series is Oded Fehr...he's a total scene stealer!
