Maggie: Decorator! I love putting up swags and Christmas decorations all through the house and outdoors. We usually have two trees and lights everywhere. I’ve collected ornaments since I was married. When my oldest daughter moved to her new house with a new baby, I gave her all of mine. So I had fun replacing them when I decided to have trees again last year, LOL. (Ooo...me too. I got ornaments to decorate our tree at my bridal shower since we were getting married close to Christmas.)

M: Getting together with my family. I’ve got four grown kids and almost four grandchildren (a grandson is due January 1!), all under the age of four. Next year it should be chaos. (early congrats!)
K: Do you write more or less during the holidays?
M: I really try to write at least 1,000 words a day, early in the morning, no matter what. My family knows it takes me a while to come out of my writing room!
K: If you’ve written a holiday themed/titled book, what is it about? If you have not, would you write a holiday themed/titled book in the future?
M: I haven’t really, although Christmas plays its part in the upcoming Lord Gray’s List (November 2012 from Kensington Brava). And the book I just finished, Lady Anne’s Lover (2013), features a very nice New Year’s Eve.
K: Which of your or Margaret Rowe’s characters would you have at your holiday feast and why?
M: The dining room is probably the last place I’d want my hot heroes, LOL. But Sir Michael Xavier Bayard from Mistress by Mistake (May 2010) knows what to do with raspberries and whipped cream. (Oh sheesh! That scene will be forever burned in my mind.)
K: What is your favorite Christmas story, book or movie? (Mine is White Christmas)
M: I love love love the movie Love Actually.
K: Real tree or fake tree?
M: Real (and tall because of the cathedral ceilings) in the living room, fake in the family room with the kids’ ornaments. There’s a little train under the fake tree that my one –year- old grandson derailed with regularity last year. We’ll see if now that he’s two if he can keep it on the tracks. I’m not betting on it.
K: Specific gifts or gift cards?
M: Both. We’ve swung from going absolutely crazy cash-wise buying the kids presents to being more modest. Now I donate to food banks and other charities instead of get things nobody really needs. But it’s hard to resist toys for the grandchildren.

K: Fruit cake or gingerbread?
M: I am probably the only person in America who loves fruitcake and doesn’t view it as a doorstop. My dad used to order one from the Collins Street Bakery and doctor it up with whiskey. Wowza. Maybe it’s just the whiskey I like. ;) (lol. You're not alone. Tessa Dare likes it too.)
K: Just enough decorations or “every tree lighted, blow up snowglobe, snow man in the yard” decorations?
M: I live in Maine, where there are lots of pine trees and natural beauty. We just go for evergreen roping on the porch railing with tiny lights, and a fresh wreath on the door. Oops, forgot the tin wiggly Santa that sits on the porch table and jiggles with the wind.
K: Home for the holidays or visiting relatives?
M: Usually home.
K: Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?

On Christmas Eve we usually have a “cocktail party,” with finger foods and snacks. The kids always thought they were grown up, and now that they are, champagne is involved too.
K: Author’s choice.
M: I am going to take the super-easy way out and ask that you pick any one of Kati’s great questions to answer! (LOL)
K: Thank you for participating in the Joyathon!
M: Thank you so much for having me! Happy Holidays, everyone, and may 2012 hold all your dreams!
SHARPE'S CHRISTMAS:
'Sharpe's Christmas' contains two short stories. In the title story Richard Sharpe, commanding the Prince of Wales's Own Volunteers, finds himself in a high, hard place with an enemy brigade on one side and a desperate force of Frenchmen fleeing their defeat in Spain on the other.
The second story, 'Sharpe's Ransom', is set in France, after the wars, when old enemies take Sharpe's woman and child hostage.

Hi ladies,
ReplyDeleteMaggie I caught you and your hubby at Lila's with Mr.D and loved it. :)
I'll answer with what my favorite movie is and it's The Bishop's Wife with Cary Grant and Loretta Young and David Niven. It's a real oldie but a great holiday movie. Now if Sir Michael could come over with some raspberries and whipped cream my Christmas would be a lot warmer. lol I enjoyed the post and wish you both a Happy Holiday.

Hi ladies
ReplyDeleteI'll answer Christmas Eve/Day? I love Christmas Eve, the evening when all the preparations are done and I finally get to sit around and chill with the family, watching Christmas movies(with a glass of Baileys) . That's the best part of Christmas for me.
Hey Ladies. Loving the event Kati. Great answers Maggie. Also, early congrats on the new grandbaby.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Christmas movie by far (and it tops my all-time favorite list too) is A Christmas Story. I seriously love this movie and it just isn't Christmas unless I've watched it at least one. Though I normally watch it way more than that. =) I quote it all the time and no one ever knows what I'm talking about.
I actually just recorded Love Actually and hope to watch it tomorrow for the first time. Looking forward to it.
@Kati-my moms favorite movie of all-time is White Christmas and can you believe I've never seen it? I plan on watching it this year for sure!
Sorry to have rambled on. =)

Ladies thanks for stopping by and hanging out with Maggie. :)
ReplyDelete@Carol: I've never seen The Bishops Wife but I was a Cary Grant fan when I was younger.
@Miki: You're welcome!
@Beebs: I love Bailey's!
@Dani: I grew up watching TCM & AMC since we had basic cable and White Christmas would play every year.
Maggie, Thanks for celebrating with us!
Beebs, I have to second on the Bailey's. I don't drink very often, but there's nothing like some Bailey's in front of the fire on a cold winter's night!
ReplyDeleteDani, don't shoot your eye out! My kids LOVE that movie and can quote whole batches of it.
Miki, last year my husband secretly bought a fake tree for the downstairs family room because he knew I'm a "real tree" person despite the mess. He put it up in silence (a first) and wasn't I surprised to go downstairs and see the little train going around, LOL.Boys will be boys.
Hi Maggie and Kati! I have two favorite Christmas movies: It's A Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed and the Bishop's Wife.
ReplyDeleteHappy Holidays!

Hi Maggie/Margaret! Whichever name you use I love your books and especially the way you draw me into your stories.
ReplyDeleteI definately agree with you that the most important thing about the holidays is being with the family. My husband and I are driving from Rhode Island to South Carolina to spend Christmas with our grandchildren (2 grandsons and 1 granddaught) even though it means we'll have to leave on Christmas Day so I can be back to work on Tuesday.
We have one tradition that has been carried on by both are sons and that is that the youngest person puts the star on top of ths tree on Christmas Eve. At times the tree has almost come down but everyone always cheers when at last it's finally safely on the tree and the lights go on!
Hi, Cathy. I really like It's a Wonderful Life too. I haven't seen it in a while & must do so this year.
ReplyDeleteJeanne, thanks! The grandchildren make Christmas for me too. Have a safe trip---bummer about work!
Who is Maggie during the holidays? (author, gift giver, last minute shopper, baker)
ReplyDeleteI loved this question! I'm the gift giver/last-minute shopper. I usually plan Christmas gifts way ahead of time and try to ship them out so that they all arrive on December 1.
But I'm busier now so I've relaxed me own targets -- now I'm just trying to get everything wrapped and ready to go before Christmas.
Hi Maggie! I saw your interview with your husband at Lila d Pasqua blog. Really adore it so much. My favourite Christmas movie is the miracle on the 31st street it's an old movie and still in black and white. I adore this movie because this movie foretell a story about a little girl and her mother that did not believed in Santa Claus got an unexpected guest the Santa klaus himself . Love this movie so much because this movie taught little kids to believe in their dreams:). I truly enjoyed the post and wish you all a very happy Christmas holiday aretha_zhen@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI'm the one doing the baking during holidays, my next older sis is the arty one who is in charge of decorations. Divide & conquer!
ReplyDeleteWe all chip in equally when it's time to eat :)

I'll take the question about specific gifts or gift cards.
ReplyDeleteI usually prefer specific gifts.Usually what I enjoy the most is actually finding the right present,so almost always I try to get specific gifts.
anniech85(at)gmail(dot)com
Anna, I love gift cards. You can't go wrong. Everytime I think I know what one of my kids might like, I'm wrong, LOL.
ReplyDeleteLinda, I love that you guys work as a team. I haven't done much baking lately...because I'll eat it all.
Thank you, Aretha! he had surprising fun doing it..he's not an online guy at all.
Tin, I've just been online ordering a couple of things for faraway friends. Love I don't have to wrap and send. I've gotten to the point I hate shopping except for TJ Maxx, my huge weakness.
I am going to say fake tree. I don't do real trees because I can't take care of a house plant and remember to water, I doubt that I can do the same for a tree.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway and the chance to win. This book looks great and would love to read it.
Thanks for the chance to win.

Okay so we just answer one of the questions that you asked Maggie?
ReplyDeleteI'll choose Home for the holidays or visiting relatives?
I'd say home, atleast for Christmas Eve/Day, because it's more comfortable and you can just pig out and relax, but like before and after Christmas it's nice to visit relatives.

Maggie, Thank you for the interview, I love learning new facts about some of my favs! Kat, I am in agreement with your favorite Christmas movie, my favorite is White Christmas also (and I happen to drive my hubby nuts while watching it because I ad-lib and sing along with THE ENTIRE MOVIE! a fact which he despises LOL). I also sing "Sisters" year round (or at least the chorus LOL). green eyes red hair at g mail dot com
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Christmas story is The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. It is a great story for the whole family-very sweet and also funny! It was also made into a great movie.
ReplyDeletehi maggie and kati,
ReplyDeletehem.. i like fruit cake ;)
We do fake tree. I love a real tree but had to give it up several years ago because of allergies. After spending a few years with runny nose, swollen eyes, etc. I decided it just wasn't worth it any more. :( And I still miss it.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Christmas movie is Chevy Chase's Christmas Vacation.
We will be home. We are lucky to have all 5 kids live close and we can get together for holidays. We always gather on Christmas Day.
I prefer specific gifts but certainly won't turn down gift cards. LOL
Merry Christmas to all and a safe and happy holiday season!
I couldn't pick just one favorite holiday movie - depends on my mood - if I want something funny I go for Christmas Vacation or one of the Tim Allen Santa Claus movies.
